Disclosing Unanticipated Outcomes: Creating a Patient-Centered Organizational Approach
Unanticipated outcomes are a reality in healthcare; although unpleasant, they should be addressed with honesty and transparency as part of a well-defined disclosure process. When done properly, disclosure can reduce the negative impact of unanticipated outcomes on patients, their families, and healthcare providers and staff. This program explores the laws, standards, and expectations of disclosure, including the current regulatory and strategic approach to disclosure. The program also covers supporting second victims of unexpected outcomes and strategies to help mitigate the disclosure process, including communication and resolution programs.
