Against Medical Advice: Autonomy Versus Safety
Whether from a place of personal autonomy or distrust, patients are refusing medical care and advice at a point in care that could have significant consequences, which is referred to as leaving “against medical advice.” This program discusses the competing interests of autonomy and safety, and the foundation for informed consent is described. The informed consent/informed refusal process and documentation are addressed in the context of leaving against medical advice. Strategies to obtain the best outcomes for both the patient and the healthcare provider when a patient leaves against medical advice are also provided.
