Electronic Health Records: Balancing Risks and Opportunities

Electronic health record (EHR) systems have revolutionized the documentation of patient care, and they have become ubiquitous in modern healthcare. Although physicians, dentists, and other healthcare professionals have seen the benefits of these systems, they also have noted numerous challenges associated with EHR design, usability, workflow patterns, and more. EHRs also have introduced a new dynamic in malpractice liability.

The publications presented in this activity — Electronic Health Records: Patient Safety and Liability Concerns and Using an EHR System for Quality Improvement: Advice for Healthcare Practices — examine various risk factors associated with EHRs as well as ways to use the technology for auditing and quality improvement.
